Terms and definitions

NOMINAL BALL DIAMETER, DW

The diameter value used to identify a ball size.

SINGLE DIAMETER OF A BALL, DWS

The distance between two parallel planes tangent to the surface of a ball.

MEAN DIAMETER OF A BALL DWM

The arithmetic mean of the largest and the smallest actual single diameters, Dws of a ball.

BALL DIAMETER VARIATION VDWS

The difference between the largest and the smallest actual single diameters, Dws of one ball

DEVIATION FROM SPHERICAL FORM, TDW

The greatest radial distance in any radial plane between a sphere circumscribed around the ball surface and any point on the ball surface.

LOT

For the purposes of this standard, a lot is a definite quantity of balls manufactured under conditions which are presumed uniform, and which is considered an entity.

LOT MEAN DIAMETER, DWML

The arithmetic mean of the mean diameter of the largest ball and that of the smallest ball, Dwm in a lot

LOT DIAMETER VARIATION, VDWL

The difference between the mean diameter of the largest ball and that of the smallest ball, Dwm, in a lot. This definition only applies to ball grades G 3 to G 200.

BALL GAGE TOLERANCE, ST

Range within which Dwml may vary for a particular ball gage. The amount St is equal to the ball gage interval, Ig.

BALL DIAMETER VARIATION WITHIN A GAGE, VDWA

The difference between the largest and the smallest mean gage diameters, Dwm established for a particular gage.

GAGE INTERVAL, IG

One of the intervals into which the deviation of the nominal diameter of a ball is divided.

BALL GAGE, S

The amount by which a mean ball diameter of a lot (for Vdwl), or a subset of a lot (for Vdwa), differs from the nominal ball diameter, Dw, rounded to a whole multiple of the ball gage interval, Ig.

GAGE DEVIATION, ΔS

The difference between the lot mean diameter, DwmL, and the sum of the nominal diameter, Dw and the ball gage, S, i.e. ΔS=Dwml-(Dw+S)

HARDNESS

Measure of resistance to penetration as determined by specific methods.
